The geographical location of the Oceanic Islands and the presence of Brazilians in htese locations has a geopolitical dimension, because it meets the requirement set by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which guarantees to Brazil establish around their Ocean Islands, sovereign rights over the Exclusive Economic Zone, with enormous strategic importance and increasinly significant economic impact.
The environmental aspect is based on scientific knowlwdge, understanding of ecosystems and conservation of their terrestrial and marine biomes, in cooperation with other ministries, government agencies in the various spheres of government and private institutions and NGOs. The Islands have complex logistics and high costs depending on the distance to the mainland, some 1,200 miles, or three and a half days travel by ship.
Ocean Islands Program aim to enlarge the access and coordinate the scientific research in Archipelago of São Pedro e São Paulo, in Island of Trindade, in Archipelago Martin Vaz and adjacent areas maritime.
Develop scientific research on Oceanic Islands, ensuring conservation of their terrestrial and marine ecosystems amd the rights of sovereignty over EEZ and Continental Shelf surroundings of ASPSP.
- Enlarge to 60 the number of research projects in development in scope of PROTRINDADE and of PROARQUIPELAGO;
- Maintain the cientific station of ASPSP occupied 365 days per year; and
- Create a Pilot Project of environmental management in scope of PROTRINDADE and PROARQUIPELAGO.
